When preparing to write this article, I had a hard time at first searching for a topic.
I thought about the tremendous amount of articles out there that focus on specific aspects of safety that are usually derived from OSHA standards. I figured the last thing that people would want to read was another article on lockout-tagout or PPE. I decided to concentrate my efforts on a topic that in my opinion is the most critical component of any successful program and without it, most all safety programs will plateau at best, in mediocrity. A recent study conducted by the American Medical Association confirmed what most businesses have known for years, Occupational injuries and illnesses are one of the most costly ailments impacting health care plans in the United States. In fact, the study found that treating these work related injuries cost more than treating cancer, heart disease and AIDS.
