Before the Interview

  • Define your expectations
  • Create or update the job description
  • Agree on the most important 3-4 responsibilities
  • Use the following as a guideline for preparing questions:
    • Job description
    • Application
    • Resume
  • Design behavioral-based interview questions (questions based on past experience as it relates to job) and avoid questions that require a “yes/no” response
  • Create a candidate rating form listing key qualifications, skills, knowledge and abilities

During the Interview

  • Take notes
  • Try to use the same questions for all candidates applying for same position
  • Use active listening skills, especially clarifying vague or general statements
  • Give the job description to the candidate to read at the end of the interview
  • Ask the candidate if he/she has any questions

After the Interview

  • Enhance your notes within one hour of interview
  • Use candidate comparison form after all candidates have been reviewed
  • Determine who will be invited back for a second interview
  • Check references and document your efforts before a job offer is made
  • Conduct background check where appropriate
  • Make offer
